Digitally Segmented and Assembled Sculpture

From Data to Physical Form

You work in the digital realm. Your forms are algorithmically generated, parametric, and beyond the reach of manual methods alone.

At AaRT, we meet you in that realm. We take your data and translate it into physical reality—with precision, speed, and fidelity beyond conventional methods.

01

Data Capture and Digital Modeling

For existing works that must be enlarged or reproduced, we use high-precision 3D laser scanning. Handheld scanners capture 18,000 points per second at an accuracy of 0.05 mm, and multiple scans are registered into a complete digital model. What this means for you: your existing work can be enlarged, replicated, or adapted with exact fidelity to the smallest detail.

For original digital artworks, we model in ZBrush, Rhino, or Grasshopper, using algorithms to control every surface and curve. What this means for you: complex forms that would require months of traditional handwork are captured completely as data, ready for fabrication at any time.

02

Digital Segmentation — The Art of Making the Whole Manufacturable

Large sculptures cannot be fabricated as a single piece and must be segmented. Using a reverse, differential refinement method—whole → zone → section → panel—we divide your model into manufacturable units. Each unit has unique geometry and is assigned its own identification number and positioning coordinates. What this means for you: every piece has a digital “identity card.” Assembly is guided by data, not guesswork.

At the same time, we design the internal steel armature and connection nodes. Every segment is prefabricated with assembly slots and reinforcing ribs. What this means for you: the sculpture is not only accurate in form, but structurally sound and dependable.

03

Digital Fabrication

3D printing (additive manufacturing): complex, non-standard components are printed using industrial fused-granulate fabrication (FGF). For the 16.5-meter-tall main cauldron tower of China's 15th National Games—a monumental free-form sculpture that would require three to five months by conventional methods—we completed the entire process from prototyping to installation in 67 days. What this means for you: speed and quality go together. Delivery of complex forms can be far faster than you imagine.

CNC machining (subtractive manufacturing): for regular geometric components, we use five-axis CNC milling and laser cutting to achieve a consistency unattainable by hand. What this means for you: dimensional variation among repeated components is minimal, making them fully interchangeable.

Digitally guided hand forming (a hybrid digital–craft process): for large metal sculptures, we first create the digital model, then mill a full-scale foam master as the “ground truth.” Artisans hammer-form each metal sheet against this reference. What this means for you: you gain both the warmth of a handcrafted surface and the precision of digital data.

04

Factory Trial Assembly and Surface Finishing

All components undergo trial assembly in the factory. Three-dimensional laser scanning verifies the accuracy of every joint. What this means for you: problems are solved in our workshop, not at your site.

Once trial assembly is approved, the components undergo surface treatment in parallel—including coating, patination, and corrosion protection—substantially reducing the overall schedule.

05

On-Site Installation and Digital Acceptance

Components are transported to the site for assembly. Each bears a unique identifier, allowing the installation team to position it precisely according to the 3D coordinates in the digital model.

After installation, we scan the completed work again and compare the as-built data with the original design model, ensuring a high degree of conformity. What this means for you: verification by data, not subjective judgment. The data demonstrates that your finished sculpture matches your concept.

CAPABILITY / VALUE

Why Choose AaRT for Digitally Segmented and Assembled Sculpture?
