Kinetic and Mechanical Sculpture

Bringing Sculpture to Life

Your concept moves, breathes, and responds.

At AaRT, we do more than build sculpture—we engineer “living machines.” From the first gear to the final control algorithm, we infuse your art with movement.

01

Concept Development and Definition of Movement

Every kinetic sculpture begins with movement itself—rotation, oscillation, extension and retraction, walking, or compound motion. What this means for you: we do not treat movement as an “added feature.” It is the core of the work, and every design decision is organized around it.

As one of our collaborating artists put it, the work must be designed “as though it were a living organism.”

02

Digital Modeling and Motion Simulation

We create a fully parametric model in professional engineering software, then test the trajectory, loading, and environmental response of every component precisely in a virtual environment. What this means for you: the movement of your sculpture is validated digitally before a single part is manufactured. No surprises.

Complex kinetic works may contain hundreds or even thousands of independent parts, each of which must move with precision. We verify them individually in simulation.

03

Mechanical Systems Design

Selection of power source: wind, electricity, spring-stored energy, or human power. We choose the drive method best suited to your motion requirements. What this means for you: your sculpture moves as you envision it, with a dependable source of power.

Transmission design: gears, cams, crank-and-link mechanisms, worm gears, chains, belts, and more. We design the “bones and muscles” that convert power into precise motion. What this means for you: movement is smooth, controllable, and durable.

Control-system development: for motor-driven works, we program motion controllers to govern every group of actions. In the kinetic sculpture “Light of the Sacred Flame,” for example, 34 of 36 tiers rotate independently. Each tier has its own motion mechanism, while a unified control system coordinates the complete performance. What this means for you: complex, coordinated movement—reliable performance, show after show.

04

Precision Component Manufacturing

Laser cutting is used for thin-sheet parts; five-axis CNC machining for structural components; wire electrical discharge machining for micron-level precision; and 3D printing for complex geometries (a single prototype may require 340–360 hours to print). Conventional metalworking—welding, sheet-metal fabrication, and hand finishing—remains indispensable whenever the process demands it. What this means for you: every component is made with the technology best suited to it, without compromise.

Bearings and joints: early knife-edge bearings were overly sensitive and unsuitable outdoors. We use sealed ball-bearing systems that are more precise, more durable, and more weather-resistant. What this means for you: your sculpture moves smoothly and reliably in any environment.

05

Factory Pre-Assembly and Motion Commissioning

All components are assembled in a logical sequence at the factory. What this means for you: we verify that the entire system runs before it leaves our facility.

Then comes repeated commissioning. Motion tuning is the process by which a sculpture becomes a “performance”: control programs are continually optimized, structures reinforced, and materials adjusted. What this means for you: your sculpture does not merely move—it moves beautifully, steadily, and for the long term.

06

Surface Finishing and On-Site Installation

After commissioning, every component receives its specified surface treatment—metallic coatings, simulated wood finishes, painted finishes, leather, glazed glass, or any other effect required by your design.

The work is then disassembled for transport, reassembled on site, and given final systems commissioning to ensure that its performance in the actual environment meets the design intent. What this means for you: anywhere in the world, your sculpture will operate as designed.

CAPABILITY / VALUE

Why Choose AaRT for Kinetic and Mechanical Sculpture?

Our CapabilitiesWhat This Means for You
01

Interdisciplinary Systems Integration

Mechanical engineers, control programmers, sculptors, and fabrication specialists all work within one team. We speak every professional language the project requires.

02

Eastern Aesthetics + Western Engineering

Our works draw on the cultural DNA of Chinese tradition—from Tang sancai glazes to Ming and Qing court palettes—while employing world-class engineering. Your sculpture combines cultural depth with engineering precision.

03

Turnkey Delivery

From concept design and control-system development to operation on site: one team, one contract, and one quality standard.

04

Chinese Culture on a Global Stage

We want our kinetic works to travel from Beijing to Singapore, Berlin, Paris, Osaka, and Dubai—as cultural ambassadors for Chinese innovation in cultural-tourism technology.

WHAT OUR ARTIST COLLABORATORS SAY
“AaRT is different. They invited me to think through and create the art project together, and throughout the collaboration I experienced their professionalism firsthand.” — Ilker Yardimci
