Large-Scale Architectural Metal Structures

Engineering Solutions for “Impossible” Geometries

Your design soars, twists, and spirals, challenging the boundaries of architecture in ways conventional construction cannot achieve.

At AaRT, we will not tell you, “Your geometry cannot be built.” We will show you how it can be built.

01

Digital Modeling and Structural Verification

We begin with your concept, whether supplied as a data file or a hand-drawn sketch. Using digital tools, we translate free-form surfaces into buildable geometric data. What this means for you: your organic form retains its expressive force while becoming an executable engineering solution.

We then verify the loads and stresses on every component in accordance with structural codes. For critical nodes in supertall buildings—such as belt trusses and outrigger trusses—we simulate the construction process to define lifting plans and installation sequences. What this means for you: we do not work on approximations. We prove feasibility before cutting the first piece of steel.

02

Material Preparation and Component Fabrication

High-strength steels such as Q345B and Q690 are held to a flatness tolerance of less than 1 mm per square meter. Extra-thick plate, up to 80 mm, undergoes specialized straightening. What this means for you: the finished structure can only be right when the raw material is right from the outset.

Every component is cut by CNC equipment from detailed fabrication drawings. Members with non-standard cross-sections are formed through cold bending, hot bending, rolling, stamping, and other processes. What this means for you: every piece fits exactly, and every curve precisely matches the model.

03

Forming Complex Curved Components — The Core Challenge

This is where conventional structural-steel fabrication ends and specialized forming begins.

Consider Wuhan's “Galaxy” sculpture: seven ribbon-like elements dance through the air. More than 40 spatial coordinate points are needed to define the surface of each steel plate, and a four-plate component requires over 160 coordinates. Steel plate 30–50 mm thick—roughly the thickness of a dictionary—is flame-heated and mechanically twisted into a doubly curved torsional form. What this means for you: we do not make standardized parts. Every component is unique, and we have the technology and experience to make each one exact.

Every formed plate undergoes nondestructive testing to confirm that no cracking or crystalline-structure changes have occurred. What this means for you: your structure will not fail. We verify the integrity of the material after forming.

04

Welding — The “Sutures” That Join Everything

Complete-joint-penetration welds: internal diaphragms in exceptionally large box columns reach 50–80 mm in thickness. Electroslag welds extend to 2.5 meters, far beyond the conventional 1.6-meter capability. Once welding begins on a circular tubular column for a supertall building, it cannot be interrupted and may continue for 48 hours. What this means for you: our welders hold the highest-level qualifications. Every weld is inspected. Your structure is safe and dependable.

05

Surface Protection and On-Site Installation

Components are descaled and coated against corrosion. Fluorocarbon coatings resist acid rain, salt spray, and intense ultraviolet exposure. Stainless-steel cladding seams are joined by GTAW/TIG welding in low-temperature conditions to achieve a visually seamless surface.

Transportation is itself a systems-engineering undertaking; a single component may weigh as much as 240 metric tons. On-site installation follows a carefully choreographed sequence: ground-level subassembly, staged lifting, temporary support, and precision connection at height. What this means for you: your structure arrives safely and is erected accurately—wherever in the world the site may be.
